Integrated disease management in pumpkin in the Southern Caribbean
, , , , and
Pumpkin production in the Caribbean region has been severely affected by several bacterial, fungal and virus diseases which cause yield losses and reduction in the quality of the fruits. Present disease management aspects depend heavily on chemical usage, which generally surpasses suggested levels by environmental protection and food safety organisations. Integrated disease management (IDM) involves the coordinated use of various strategies to control diseases that optimizes both economic and environmental factors. A three-year study of IDM, synchronising chemical, biological, cultural and non?conventional measures to control pumpkin diseases was conducted across fields in Trinidad and other Southern Caribbean territories. Diseases were examined and recorded for severity and progression. The effects of the IDM on disease incidences were assessed in the fields. Based on this study various combo IDM treatments were generated which significantly reduced disease incidences when implemented.
