Disease status of pumpkins in the Southern Caribbean
, , , , and
Pumpkin is an important food crop of the Caribbean region, however, in recent years, the crop has been afflicted by many bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Diseases afflicting pumpkins mainly affect foliage, vines and fruits. A three-year survey during 2014-2017 and a monitoring programme of pumpkin diseases were carried out at several locations in the Southern Caribbean islands. The research team of the lead institution, UWI-STA carried out field surveys in Trinidad, St. Vincent, Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Suriname and Guyana to monitor the incidence of diseases in pumpkin. Overall, seventeen important diseases were recorded in pumpkin with varying severity scales, in different planting seasons. Yellow mosaic virus, gummy stem blight and downy mildew were identified as the important emerging diseases in this region causing significant yield losses. Disease data collected through this study will be helpful for identification of diseases and for implementation of management practices for pumpkins in this region.
