Detection of banana bunchy top virus in diseased and symptomless banana plants with monoclonal antibody
Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) was detected in all the younger leaves of banana with bunchy top symptoms, but was either absent or present in low concentrations in the healthy-looking older leaves of infected plants. The diseased plants contained relatively high concentrations of BBTV in leaf blades, midribs, petioles and sheaths of the second leaf from the top. However, BBTV was not detected in the rhizomes, and was either absent or present in low concentrations in the roots and the sheaths of the older healthy-looking leaves. In addition to detection of BBTV in Cavendish banana (AAA), BBTV was also found in leaves of diseased Latundan banana (AAB) and wild Formosa banana (AA). The ELISA test used also detected BBTV in three of 40 healthy-looking banana plants surrounding 10 diseased plants.
