Continuous cropping in areas of shifting cultivation in the southern Sudan
M. Osman Abu-Zeid
An account is given of an 11 year experiment to test the feasibility of replacing shifting cultivation as practiced by the Azande tribe, with a system of permanent cultivation based on a two course rotation of cotton followed by groundnuts and eleusine. Combination of planting on the flat and on ridges with and without mulch farmyard manure or artificial fertilizers applied annually only to the cotton crop were tested together with more frequent weeding. The experiment showed that while ridging was of no value, all crops benefited from the mulch and application of farmyard manure and artificial fertilizer and that acceptable yields could be so maintained. Relatively high standards of weed control were important.
