Effects of non-genetic factors and estimation of genetic parameters on fleece weight of Awassi sheep in Iraq
A total of 756 fleece weights taken from 336 Awassi sheep over a period of five years were used to study the influences of non-genetic factors on the fleece weight and to estimate the heritability and repeatability of this trait. Sex, age of individual, year of shearing and type of birth had a highly significant effect on fleece weight. Males exceeded females by an average of 0·46 kg in fleece weight. The highest wool production was obtained at the first and second shearings. Heritability estimates for fleece weight were found to be 0·47 by paternal half-sib correlation and 0·16 by regression of offspring on dam. Repeatability of fleece weight was 0·32 by the intraclass correlation method, and 0·36 by correlation between pairs of records.
