Observations on the pollination of papaya (Carica papaya L.) in Jamaica
J.B. Free
Hand pollination failed to increase the fruit set by papaya flowers in January and February thus indicating that it was not limited by lack of pollination. Bagging pistillate flowers to prevent pollination did not diminish set greatly, if at all. Bagging hermaphrodite flowers also failed to provide evidence that pollination is necessary although more experiments are needed. Trees with pistillate flowers only had a greater set and carried more developing fruits than trees with hermaphrodite flowers. At dusk the flowers were visited by many Skipper butterflies, Perichares philetes philetes.
