Nodulation of tropical legumes in Singapore
A total of 68 species of legumes, comprising 27 members of Caesalpinioideae, 13 of Mimosoideae, 27 of Papilionoideae and one of Swartzioideae were examined for nodulation. Slightly more than half the species examined (37) did not have root nodules; most of the non-nodulating species belonged to Caesalpinioideae. The largest number of nodulating species (81·5 per cent) were found in Papilionoideae. Nodulation is reported for the first time for Calliandra inaequilatera (Mimosoideae). There was no correlation between nodulating ability of a plant and whether it is an indigenous or introduced species.
