Effect of soil moisture content on nitrogen mineralization during incubation of a slightly alkaline Gangetic alluvial soil and an acid Red soil from Bangladesh
The effects of soil moisture content (25, 50, 75, 100 and 133 per cent saturation) on mineral-nitrogen changes during incubation (30°C) for six weeks of a Gangetic alluvial soil (pH 7·5; G soil) and a Red soil (pH 5·0; R soil) from Bangladesh were studied. In the G soil mineral-r accumulation increased with moisture content to maxima at 50 and 75 per cent saturation, but there was no accumulation at 100 and 133 per cent saturation; mineral-N accumulated entirely as nitrate. In the R soil accumulation increased with moisture content to 75 per cent saturation, decreased slightly to 100 per cent saturation and was at a maximum at 133 per cent saturation; mineral- accumulated entirely as nitrate at 25 to 100 per cent saturation, but entirely as ammonium at 133 per cent saturation.
