Seed dormancy in Panicum maximum Jacq.
R.L. Smith
The loss of seed dormancy was studied in nine Panicum maximum Jacq. genotypes selected to have a wide range of initial seed dormancy and stored under two temperatures, 10° and 22°C. Loss of seed dormancy was more rapid at 22° than at l0°C. Genotypes responded differently to storage time and storage temperature. Most genotypes had lost most of their seed dormancy after four months storage at 22°C. One genotype, PM 64, required at least 12 months at 10°C to reach its maximum germination. Chemical treatments of H2SO4, KNO3, gibberellic acid and water were compared in factorial combinations. Again genotypes responded differently and no general recom-mendations could be made. The evaluations of storage and chemical treat-ments indicate that specific tests must be made on the P. maximum genotypes or cultivars of interest to maximize germination.
