A survey of Auchenorrhyncha (Insecta: Homoptera) associated with palms in southern Florida
Auchenorrhyncha (leafhopper sensu lato) were collected from palms in Florida with the objective of identifying possible vectors of the pathogen of lethal yellowing disease (LY) which attacks coconut palm, Cocos nucifera L., and apparently 23 other species of palm. Collections were made from 350 palms of 31 species from numerous localities, mostly in the LY-infected area of southern Florida. Haplaxius crudus (Van Duzee) (Cixiidae) appears likely to be a vector of the LY pathogen based on its distribution, apparent host range, feeding behaviour, and phylelic relationships with vectors of similar disease organisms. Cedusa inflata (Ball) (Derbidae) and Idioderma virescens Van Duzee (Membracidae) were collected less frequently on palms. Fourteen additional species of Auchenorrhyncha were rarely collected on palms.
