Micronutrient cation status of some upland soils in Sierra Leone
, and
Surface sample from 11 soil series were collected from the Njala area and one from Mange. These samples were analysed for micronutrient cations using 0.005 M DTPA and 0.05 M HCl methods of extraction. The DTPA method of analysis gave higher average value for extractable Cu and Fe whereas the HCl method gave higher value for Zn and Mn. Sixty six per cent of the soils were deficient with respect to Zn, while the majority of the Fe values were in the excess range. The availability of Cu and Mn seem to be adequate in most of the samples analysed. Relationships among micronutrient and other selected properties were also studied. The frequency of some micronutrient deficiencies may be expected to increase the intensity of agriculture increases on upland soils in Sierra Leone.
