The importance of host factors of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) on the control of rust (Uromyces appendiculatus)

The aim of this work was-to determine how different properties of the host, Phaseolus vulgaris L., might influence the control of rust, Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger. Several host factors, like leaf age, leaf type, and cultivar type were investigated. Disease density was highest on leaves 12 days old at inoculation for unifoliates and 22 days old for trifoliate leaves. The disease density on leaves younger or older than this was significantly lower. However, the trifoliate leaves were significantly more resistant than corresponding unifoliate leaves. A few cultivars chosen at random showed a wide variation in their susceptibility to the rust.
