Yield potential, fertility requirements, and drought tolerance of grain amaranth compared with maize under Zimbabwean conditions
M.I. Piha
The yield potential of grain amaranth varieties was compared with that of maize under various levels of fertilizer and moisture stress in Zimbabwe. In high yield environments maize produced considerably more grain than amaranth, largely as a result of the very low harvest index of amaranth. Under conditions of strong moisture stress, maize yields were more adversely affected than amaranth, resulting in similar yields. Amaranth was more sensitive to soil acidity, and more demanding of P and N than was maize, probably because its leaves and grain had higher nutrient concentrations.
