Leakage during imbibition by seeds of bambarra groundnut (Voandzeia subterranea (L.) Thouars) at different stages of loss of viability
Nagineni Sreeramulu
Measurements of conductivity and the contents of K, soluble sugars and amino acids of the leachates at different periods of imbibition by dry viable and non-viable bambarranut seeds, Voandzeia subterranea (L.) Thouars, indicated an initial rapid leakage of metabolites by both viable and non-viable seeds. This was followed by a very rapid leakage in non-viable seeds up to 16-20 h of imbibition but very little leakage in viable seeds. Initial absorption of water by dry non-viable seeds was very rapid compared with viable ones. Loss of germinability of bambarranut seeds was positively correlated with the extent of leakage as measured by the conductivity and the contents of K, soluble sugars and amino acids of the leachates at 20 h of imbibition by the seeds at different periods of storage.
