A day-neutral mutant in jute
The inheritance and response to short days were studied in a day-neutral jute mutant, the photoperiod insensitivity being inherited as a simple recessive trait. Irrespective of the time of sowing, the mutant grew vegetatively for 100 days before flowering. In the short-day exposure experiments, it was insensitive to 8 h day length up to 100 days after sowing. Hence, unlike other cultivars, it can be grown for fibre during any time of the year in view of its long basic vegetative phase.
