Air and soil temperature relationships in a network of tropical soil families
The practical problems of obtaining reliable estimates of soil temperature in remote areas without nearby meteorological stations are well known. Although advances in meteorology and satellite communication have been made, it is virtually impossible to gather air and soil temperature data or other climatic data for a particular site unless a meteorological station is located on that site. The results of this study indicate that, in the tropics, soil temperature estimates at 10 and 50 cm depths can be made which are close to observed values by using air temperature alone or air temperature plus latitude. Estimates were within 1.3 and 1.0°C, respectively, for a network of tropical soil families.
