Extending the shelf-life of melongene (Solanum melongena L.) using polymeric films
Fruits of the 'La Pastora' and 'Long Purple' cultivars of melongene were individually sealed in films of low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, shrink-wrap and wrapped in paper bags and examined for marketable quality after 10 and 17 days of refrigeration at 8-9º C. Film-wrapped fruits of both cultivars were of excellent quality after 10 days' refrigeration, but only 'La Pastora' melongenes remained in good condition after 17 days, and an additional one day's exposure to ambient temperature reduced quality only marginally. Seal packaging of melongenes in high density polyethylene appears to be a useful and beneficial supplement to refrigeration, especially with the cultivar 'La Pastora'.
