Evaluation of ten Solanum potato cultivars for major insect pests, natural enemies and pest resistance in the highlands of Peru
Native potato cultivars, Hualash, Amarilla, Semita, Tarma, Cunuri, and improved cultivars, Molinera, Ranrahirca, Mariva, Revolucion and Renacimiento were field-screened for resistance to locally occurring insect pests in Huanuco, Peru, 1980-81. Important tuber and foliage-feeding pests and their natural enemies were identified. The improved cultivar Molinera had significantly lower (P < 0.05) populations of Epitrix spp., Myzus persicae, Empoasca sp. and Frankliniella sp. The native cultivar Amarilla had the lowest infestation by Liriomyza sp. AH po tato cultivars were severely damaged by the larvae of the Andean weevil complex, and damage caused by these pests on harvested tubers for all cultivars exceeded 50%. Improved cultivar Renacimiento had the highest yield, 21.09 kg plot-1 (6 m-1).
