Optimal planting date for seed quality and seed yield of irrigated soybean in Egypt
The effect of nine sowing dates (10 April-30 June) on seed yield and seed quality of four soybean varieties was tested in a field experiment for two consecutive years. Planting date and variety both had significant (P< 0.001) effect on plant height, seed and pod number, 100-seed weight, seed yield and germination percentage of the seeds produced. Delaying planting after 10 June significantly increased the germination percentage but this was associated with a significant reduction in seed yield. A planting date around 20 May seems to be optimal for local conditions, comprising high seed quality and maintaining satisfactory seed yield.
