Factors affecting the field establishment of Plantago ovata Forsk. in northern Australia
High temperatures following planting correlate with substantial declines in establishment of Plantago ovata in the field. This establishment can be improved by manipulations of irrigations at planting and by changing the seed bed structure. Expected establishment in the optimal month of May in the Kununurra area of Australia is 42%, comparable with published values for the dominant production area in India. However, this can decline to zero if mean planting temperatures are high (31 °C) and only a single establishment irrigation is given.
