Mineral composition of Indonesian ruminant forages

The concentrations of essential dietary mineral nutrients were determined in ruminant forages from selected sites in five provinces in Indonesia; East and West Java, South Sulawesi, North Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara. Figures are presented for N, S, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Co, Mn and Fe in grasses (22 genera), legumes (22 genera), herbs/weeds (seven genera), non-leguminous tree leaves (nine genera) and 14 crop by-products. Mineral concentrations were assessed in relation to recommended dietary requirements for cattle. It is concluded that the most likely mineral deficiencies are Na and Cu, low concentrations of which were of widespread occurrence. Marginal levels of P occurred with moderate frequency in all regions, as did those for Zn in most. Potential deficiencies of Co, Se and Mo also exist, but such problems with Ca, Mg, Mn, K and Fe appear unlikely:
