Economic evaluation of the performance of purebred and crossbred dairy cattle under on-farm conditions in tropical northern Australia
On-farm production data form 1980-87 were used to determine the expected net present value of income from a milking cow during its lifespan for several breeds of dairy cattle in the Darwin area of the Northern Territory, Australia. The results indicate that the Australian- Friesian-Sahiwal (AFS) crossbreed produced that highest mean net income, following by the Holstein-Friesian (HF) purebreed. The other breeds considered were unprofitable under diverse economic conditions.
