Rooting pattern in pigeonpea. (390)
Two distinct types of root systems were identified among four contrasting pigeonpea cultivars: (i) a tap root type, which has been the root type normally associated with pigeonpea and (ii) a lateral root type, which has not been reported previously. The former had a very strong tap root, a smaller number of strong secondary roots, and a much lower shoot:root ratio, while the latter was characterized by a weak tap root, a greater number of weak secondary roots, and high shoot:root ratio. These results suggest that there is variation for pattern of root development in pigeonpea.
