The sweetpotato leaf beetle, Typophorus nigritus viridicyaneus (Crotch) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Eumolpinae) is an emerging pest of sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. (Convolvulaceae) in Jamaica. Heavy infestations of sweetpotato leaf beetles were reported primarily from sweetpotato fields in St Ann, Clarendon, and St Catherine Parishes in the central portion of Jamaica. Several sweetpotato genotypes from the USDA-ARS sweetpotato breeding programme at the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, Charleston, SC, U.S.A., were evaluated in Jamaica for resistance to the larval stages of this pest. Genotypes White Regal and CD-P53R were the most promising, exhibiting resistance to sweetpotato leaf beetle larvae in the fields in Jamaica.
