Relationships among udder and teat size characteristics with milk yield in Red Sokoto goats. (114)
The udder and teat size characteristics and their relationships with milk yield characteristics were studied in 92 lactating Red Sokoto goats from six herds. The udder and teat characteristics averaged were as follows: udder circumference (UC), 38.8 ± 0.91 cm; udder height (UH), 17.1 ± 0.45 cm; distance between teats (DT), 11.5 ± 0.55 cm; teat circumference (TC), 7.2 ± 0.57 cm; and teat length (TL), 5.2 ± 0.30 cm. The traits were of low to high variability (13.7-42.9%). Season of kidding, parity, litter size, and litter composition of doe significant (P < 0.05) affected udder and teat size characteristics. The correlations observed for udder and teat size characteristics were positively significant (P < 0.01; r = 0.38-0.91), and their relationships with milk yield were also positive and significant (P < 0.01-0.05; r = 0.25-0.52).
