Role of N in yield enhancement of clipped wheat. (211)
A field study was conducted at the Research Farm, Hawalbagh (1250 m above mean sea level) of Vivekananda Institute of Hill Agriculture (Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan), Almora, India, for three consecutive years, commencing from 1993-94 with an aim to study the effect of N doses on the growth of forage and grain yield of clipped wheat. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Nitrogen doses (N0, N40, N80, N120, and N160 kg ha-1) in sub-plots and clipping management, i.e., one clipping [75 days after sowing (DAS)] and two clippings (60 and 90 DAS) were kept in main plots. Two clippings recorded significantly more green (8.74 t ha-1) and dry (2.40 t ha-1) forage than the single clipping; the differences being 27.2% in green and 42.9% in dry forage. Linear regression analysis indicated that higher dry matter production in the form of green forage at higher fertility levels did not adversely affect the grain yield. Undipped plots recorded significantly highest grain (4.78 t ha-1) and straw (13.28 t ha-1) yield. Further, one clipping recorded significantly more grain (0.28 t ha-1) and straw yield (0.87 t ha-1) than two clippings. Due to N application, both grain and straw yield increased significantly with each incremental dose of 40 kg N ha-1. Undipped with 120 kg N ha-1 produced significantly higher grain as well as straw yield than clipping with 120 kg N ha-1. The results showed that grain yield loss compensation by providing more N (40 kg ha-1) had occurred; consequently, 160 kg N ha-1 with clipping produced comparable yield (4.76 ha-1) with undipped at 120 kg N ha-1 (4.78 t ha-1).
