Adaptability of quinoa in a subtropical environment in Sicily. (01)

Over a two-year period of trials carried out in South-East Sicily, the morphological and qualitative characteristics of five different quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) varieties were studied in the springsummer growing season under an irrigation regime. A reduced yield was observed compared with other cereals cultivated under these environmental conditions. The variety Amarilla showed the highest grain yield and 1000-seed weight. The mean protein content of quinoa is 13.8%, but the value found in this cultivation environment was about 16.7%, superior to that of other common cereals (rice, barley, and wheat). The results also showed absence of gluten.
