Rapid screening for drought tolerance in peanut germplasm in India with the SPAD Chlorophyll Meter. (156)
This study investigates the potential use of the Soil-Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) Chlorophyll Meter for rapid screening for drought-tolerant varieties in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L) germplasm in India. Using two methods, chlorophyll contents were investigated in 200 genotypes. The trait-based selection method was found to be better for screening of drought-resistant varieties using SPAD Chlorophyll Meter Readings (SCMR). In the empirical selection method, within-cross differences were non-significant at the four centres used except for Jalgoan (India). Parent ICGS-76 showed a higher SCMR (44.87) among peanut genotypes. Higher SCMR values identified drought-tolerant varieties among the genotypes used in this study.
