Molecular characterization based on RAPD markers of high and low sugar plants from selfed progeny of an intergeneric hybrid of Saccharum and Erianthus. (186)
Molecular analysis of the high sugar and low sugar offsprings from the selfed progeny of a clone 91-60, derived from Saccharum spp. hybrid Co 7201 X E. arundinaceus (100)-self, was done along with the parents. RAPD markers obtained from high sugar and low sugar inter-generic hybrids could be classified into seven categories based on the presence/absence of bands in parents and offsprings. Some markers present in either male or female parent were absent in progeny while some new markers were present in progeny. Moreover, markers in progeny when subjected to similarity analysis, revealed more similarity with the female parent. RAPD thus proved a powerful tool to detect different molecular markers in this case and are of potential value for application in parentage analysis of other intergeneric hybrid progeny clones.
