Closed-form Formulae for the Unsymmetrical Load Cases in the Analysis of Box Culverts

Abstract

In Trinidad and Tobago box culverts form a major part of its bridge inventory. Many designers use the formulae provided by Reynolds Handbook to perform preliminary analysis. However, these formulae treat only with symmetric vertical and lateral loads and thus provide only limited information for bridge-size box culverts. This paper remedies this deficiency by providing formulae for the unsymmetrical load cases that will arise in the analysis.
