Abstract
The Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture stood for 40 years by its motto Via colendi haud facilis. Indeed, the wat of the cultivator is hard, if not sometimes harder in the tropics than anywhere else. Although the College during its existence accumulated a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of tropical agriculture, there are still many unsolved problems, not only in the fields of crop and animal husbandry but also of plant diseases and insect pests. The last two, in particular, continually give rise to new difficulties which must be conquered by every scientific weapon at our disposal.
