Plant growth promotive effects of vermiwash and vermicompost obtained from different substrates on tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum Mill.)

Abstract

In recent years due to serious concerns of chemical pesticides, the demand for organic products, particularly based on plant residues recycled to produce vermiwash and vermicompost, is on the rise. In the current study, the effect of vermiwash and vermicompost from different plant substrates on growth parameters of tomatoes [Solanum lycopersicum Mill. (F1 Mongal)] were assessed. The results indicated that vermiwash from combined sources namely, T4 (Rice straw + cattle dung + earthworms), T6 (Neem + Rice straw + cattle dung + earthworms) and T7 (Neem + Bagasse + cattle dung + earthworms), are significantly effective in improving the yield and growth parameters of tomato. Vermiwash also had a positive effect on growth and yield of tomatoes. These results suggest that the use of vermiwash and vermicompost obtained from various combined substrates, could be used for cultivation of tomatoes for effective plant productivity.
