Biological control of black rot of cabbage caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) is prone to infection by many pathogens including fungi, bacteria and viruses. Black rot is one of the most destructive diseases of cabbage caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) [(Pammel) Dowson], and estimated to cause extensive yield loss up to 67 per cent. The present study sought to evaluate the efficacy of biocontrol agents viz., Streptomyces expoliatus, Streptomyces violaceusniger, Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens, certain plant extracts, organic amendments and selected plant oils, against black rot disease under field conditions. The field study revealed that seed treatment with Streptomyces exfoliatus @ 10g/kg followed by soil application of neem cake @ 150 kg/ha and foliar application of Streptomyces exfoliatus @ 0.2 per cent showed the lowest percent disease index (PDI) and highest yield when compared to the control. Hence, the present investigation suggests that the application of S. exfoliatus either alone or along with organic amendments involving various methods of application, significantly reduced the disease incidence under field conditions. In addition, it helped to increase the cabbage yield significantly compared to untreated plants. Hence it is concluded that Streptomyces exfoliatus could be a potential biological control for sustainable management of black rot disease of cabbage.
