Modification of the Bhola Method. (209)

Abstract

A method for mass propagation of Theobroma cacao L. (The Bhola Method) was recently published. This note records a modification to the method whereby the use of a simple new device, Union Slide, (henceforth referred to as U-Slide) has made the procedure very rapid (takes less than a minute to have a seedling grafted and covered), highly efficient and simple. The apparatus was successfully tested on twelve and fourteen-day old cocoa seedlings; the results indicate high levels of success and a very low dieback percentage (4-6%). Further applications can also be considered to other propagation procedures in cacao and other crops.
