Abstract

Fifteen sugarcane progenies comprising 10 best progenies identified from preliminary yield testing along with five standard check varieties were evaluated in replicated trials in four locations in Nigeria for plant crop (2011-2012 and ratoon crop (2012-2013) with the aim of identifying superior progenies which could be recommended for testing in the various sugar plantations in Nigeria’s savannah ecologies. The combined analysis of variance indicated that environment (E) and genotype x environment (GE) interaction were highly significant (P?0.001) for cane and sucrose yields. The GGE biplot accounted for 96.9 and 87.7% of treatment sum of square for sugarcane cane and sucrose yield, respectively. Progenies USRI 08/63 had the highest mean cane yield (78.09t/ha) performance while USRI 08/46 was adjudged the best sucrose (21.58) yielding progeny. Cane yield positively and highly significantly correlated with number of millable stalks (r=0.869**) and tillers (r=0.844**). Bacita was relatively the most ideal environment for identification of superior sugarcane genotypes. USRI 08/63, USRI 08/03, USRI 08/46 and USRI 08/16 are recommended for testing in the various sugar plantations in Nigeria’s savannah ecologies.
