Heterosis in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Susmita Datta Ray, S. Sen

In a full diallel of six self-pollinated sesame varieties, 'B-67', 'B-14', 'ST-7', 'RT-1', 'MT-67-52' and 'R-9' heterosis over better and mid-parents were pronounced for plant height, number of days to flowering 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Heterosis was also significant and positive for number of capsules plane and number of capsules main stem-l in few crosses. Wide ranges of variation in heterosis estimates of some reciprocal hybrids revealed that choice of pollen and seed parent is important for exploring hybrid vigour.
