Iodine status of some cattle in Uganda

M.I.E. Long, G. Kaguruni

Abstract

The method used for the determination of protein bound iodine, based on a wet digestion technique of the plasma and subsequent estimation of iodine through the catalytic effect of the iodide ion on the reduction of the ceric ion by arsenious oxide, is described. Levels of protein bound iodine tend to be at the lower end of the normal range with a high proportion below. The inclusion of iodide in mineral licks and supplements is considered to be justified.
