Abstract
At the present stage of development of the Sudan Gezira Scheme there is ample justification for consideration of an intensification and diversification of production patterns within the Scheme. This raises important technical questions particularly about the possibilities of change in emphasis in cropping in various parts of the Scheme and of changes in the relative importance of field machinery and manual labour. At the same time technical changes will bring about increased pressure on an organizational structure which is already in some respect inappropriate. The future functions and status of the tenant vis-a-vis those of the managerial staff of the Sudan Gezira Board are issues of crucial importance which, if the Scheme is to continue to be productive must be resolved.
