Tropical poultry house design-its effect on health and production under intensive conditions

C. Van Dijk, B. Vickery

The stress imposed on poultry in the tropics by high temperature, high humidity, poor ventilation, and ammonia in the atmosphere and their effects on layer and broiler performances are discussed in relation to poultry house design which often does little to minimize the harmful effects. Recommendations are put forward for poultry house design in the tropics relating to wall height, window area, roofing and house siting. Adoption of these leads to improved ventilation and so to better health and productivity of the birds.
