Abstract
The plant species a ten by six Ankole bullocks on three different types of pasture at three different seasons of the year were recorded each minute for two days for each season and pasture type. Selection by the cattle of certain favoured species both by the area grazed and on a plant to plant basis was recorded. Some Species were apparently relatively less palatable in the dry season and legumes became relatively more so in the dry season. Dicotyledonous plants were actively avoided even when there was little grass except during well defined browsing periods. The grass Cymbopogon afronardus was used as a browse plant. No relationship was observed between the palatability of the grasses and their published crude protein and crude fibre content nor their digesti-bility. The importance of this is discussed. Brachiaria decumbens and Setaria aequalis are deemed to be the most desirable common grasses in Ankole.
