Abstract

In a field experiment, comparisons were made of Dowfume MC-2 (98 per cent methyl bromide+2 per cent chloropicrin), methomyl (Lannate, 90 per cent wettable powder), O-ethyl S,S-dipropyl phosphorodithioate [Mocap 10 per cent granules (G)], O-ethyl O(3-methyl-4-methylthiophenyl) isopropylamidophosphate (Nemacur, 5 per cent G), 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane and other halogenated hydrocarbons [Nemagon, 75 per cent emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and Nemagon, 20 per cent G] for the control of five plant parasitic nematode species and their effect on yield of sweet pepper. Nematodes were counted in soil samples from each experimental plot at two and five months after application of the nematicides. While all nematicides raised the yield of fruit by 7·3 to 27·9 per cent, only Nemagon (75 per cent EC) at 29 I/ha did so significantly. Dowfume at 814kg/ha always significantly reduced the nematode populations in the soil. There was no significant correlation between reduction of the nematode population and increase in yield. No compound showed evidence of being phytotoxic.
