Abstract
In a previous investigation, DALAL (1974) observed that intercropping of maize (Zea mays L.) with pigeon peas (Cajanus cajan), in a mixed stand or in alternate rows, significantly reduced the grain yield of maize but that of pigeon peas was not significantly affected. This is, in general, contrary to the observations of AGBOOLA and FAYEMI ( 1971 ) who found that legume yield was greatly depressed by maize shade whereas maize yield was not seriously affected. KURTZ et al. (1952) suggested that applied nitrogen could reduce competition between intercrop and maize. In the study reported here the feasibility of intercropping maize with soya bean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) with and without added nitrogen was investigated.
