Abstract

A new fruit rot of guava was found on the islands of Hawaii and Kauai. The infected area appeared water-soaked and expanded rapidly. Within one week the whole fruit was affected and covered with a yellowish, fuzzy mass of fungal fruiting bodies and mycelia. Mucor hiemalis was consistently isolated from the advancing margin of the infected area. The fungus caused disease symptoms on guava fruit similar to those occurring in the fields. It was shown to be a wound parasite on guava fruits.
