Abstract
Fifty four accessions of H. altissima (Poir.) Stapf & C. E. Hubb. and three accessions of H. uncinata R. Br. were screened in glasshouse trials for resistance to the yellow sugar-cane aphid, Sipha flava (Forbes). Tests were conducted to ascertain differences in resistance to aphids between and within species. Variable degrees of resistance were pre cent in H. altissima; the three accessions of H. uncinata were resistant. Nine accessions of H. altissima and three accessions of H. uncinata were significantly more resistant than the control. Paramount consideration should be given to individual clonal resistance in the continued search for and use of germplasm resistant to aphids.
