Abstract
Leaf areas of pigeon pea can be estimated quickly and accurately using linear regression equations which relate the trifoliate leaf area (A) to the product of length (L) and breadth (B) of the central leaflet. The most suitable formulation is A= M(LB) but the regression coefficient, M, was not homogeneous among the nine cultivars of pigeon pea for which data are presented. However, a single equation was found to be suitable for the estimation of leaf areas of the two new dwarf cultivars currently undergoing agronomic trials. For these cultivars, 'UW17' and 'UW26', estimates of leaf area can be obtained from non-destructive linear measurements using the regression equation A= 1·705 (LB).
