Abstract

Three fungal pathogens: Crinipellis perniciosa, Monilia roreri and Phytopthora palmivora inflict severe losses on cocoa production in Ecuador. In the present study it was shown that five protectant fungicides applied weekly to trees previously hand pollinated on the lower part of the trunk gave good control of all three pathogens. This combination of chemical control and cultural practice is simple and can provide an economic means of reducing losses until plants more resistant to the principal disease (witches' broom) can be made available.
