Abstract

Results are described from glasshouse screening of multiple disease resistant lines of cowpea for resistance to three Nigerian isolates of southern bean mosaic virus. Twenty three lines were identified as possessing resistance to all three Isolates, and one line (TVu 1948) remained symptomless in all tests. All of these additionally possess resistance to cowpea (yellow) mosaic virus. Three types of resistance were observed: immunity (symptomless reactions without retrieval of the virus), tolerance (symptomless infection) and hyper-sensitivity (necrotic local lesion development, with or without necrotic systemic symptoms).
