Abstract

About 900 trials were carried out on private farms in Uganda to determine the effects of N and P fertilizers on finger millet and maize yields. Performance of the cereals in individual trials could not be related to soil properties. However average finger millet yields and responses to N and P fertilizers, at different centres having ferrallitic soils where an appreciable number of trials were carried out, were related to the average soil organic matter levels. Average maize yields were related to soil organic matter levels, but average maize responses to N fertilizer could not be related to any soil or climatic properties.
