Abstract

Soil erosion is a result of land misuse and cannot be tackled by anti-erosive measures adopted with disregard to the farming systems and socio-economic considerations of the community involved. Serious erosion hazards on clay soils result from soil characteristics and torrential rainfall. Crop residue mulches, reduced tillage systems, periodic crop covers and stabilization of steep slopes by afforestation are recommended measures. Adaptive research is needed to develop these conservation-effective measures as subsystems and incorporate them into local specific farming systems. Appropriate landuse and good crop husbandry are effective measures against soil erosion control.
