Abstract
A basal high fibre diet was formulated to contain 500g/kg DIM sawdust-cassava waste mixture .Thus, Treatment 1 (T1) which was the control consisted of the basal diet without yeast culture. Treatments 2 (T2) and 3 (T3) consisted of the basal diet plus 3g and 4g yeast culture, respectively. Fifteen lactating does were randomized against the experimental diets in a completely randomized design model for a 70 day period. The results revealed that living east culture supplementation improved body weight gain of the lactating does, with highest average daily gain being achieved by does fed 4g of living yeast culture per day per animal. Feed intake was similar between supplemented treatments 1 and 2 while lower consumption was reported for does fed Treatment 1 (control). Daily average milk yield rose (P<0.05) with yeast culture supplementation and was similar between supplemented diets (0.58, 0.86 and 0.89kg/d for Treatments 1 (control), 2 and 3, respectively). Milk fat and protein were increased by yeast culture supplementation; greater (P<0.05) for Treatment 3 than for the mean of Treatments 1 and 2.Yeast culture supplementation of the diet led to Increases of the proportion of milk lactose, total solids and fat corrected milk (FCM), compared to Treatment 1( control). Yeast culture supplementation of goat diet had a favourable effect on milk quantity and quality.
